Kentucky Wine History
Accepting a proposal from the Wine Industry Association of Kentucky (the first Association of its kind,) and selling shares to wealthy investors from the area including noted statesman Henry Clay, Jean Jacques Du Four planted a five acre vineyard in 1799, the site of the first commercial vineyard in America. He primarily used European grape varieties, planting 33 different species. The first year the grapes did exceedingly well, and impressed the Lexingtonians in the Association. He solicited more winemakers from Europe to join him, some his bothers and sisters. Ultimately, however the vineyard failed as it seems the European grapes were not hearty enough, all but two varieties succumbing to disease.
When prohibition was instituted in the 1920's virtually all of the Kentucky winemaking grapevines were destroyed. For years after the repeal of prohibition Kentucky did not regain its interest in wineworthy vineyards.
In 1982, the Kentucky Vineyard Society was re-established. Part of the resurgence now being enjoyed is due to a state program that may fund as much as half the startup cost of new vineyards and the efforts of this organization... and the excellent varieties and quality of winemaking grapes being grown even better than before.

Springhill Winery and Plantation Bed 'n Breakfast is located in central Kentucky near the majestic town of Bardstown and historic Bloomfield. At home on the stately, historic plantation, circa 1857, Springhill has become a destination to discover both the historic past and trendy present.
With our official christening in June 2002, we are proud to announce that there are four suites available; each complete with it's own private bath and sitting area and each with it's own ambiance. Choose from your favorite time periods of Victorian, Kentucky Colonial or Classic Renaissance. All rooms have a spectacular view of the rolling Kentucky hills.
During your stay, we hope you enjoy the fresh cut (seasonal) flowers and fresh morning coffee and muffins. Our wine master will be give you a personal wine tasting along with a tour upon your request. If you'd like, our host will share stories and history surrounding the plantation during the Civil War.
